Memorial Day 2009
The morning was beautiful, in spite of the threat of thunderstorms that have plagued us all weekend. The sun shone brightly and contrasted the flags against the green grass and trees. Our crews of volunteers were out at 6 AM putting flags out on the streets of Mancos, and on the gravesites of all theVeterans and Ladies Auxiliary Members' gravesites in Cedar Grove Cemetery. We enjoyed breakfast at the Post, prepared by our expert chef, nearly 90 year old, Woodrow "Tex"Hudson and some of our Ladies Auxiliary members.About 40 people attended, many who joined us at Cedar Grove for the Memorial Ceremony, conducted by VFW Post 5231 officers and Ladies Auxiliary President, as we and other members of our organizations offered tribute to the sacrifices made by our Nation's military throughout its history. Veteran gravesites at Cedar Grove Cemetery include those from the Civil War to our most recent conflicts, reflecting the history of our tiny, but special "Old West" town.
The Avenue of Flags throughout the main roads of the cemetery is composed, largely, of flags donated for the day, by area veteran's families. These are the flags presented to the family after they have draped a coffin of their veteran loved-one, during a funeral with military honors.

Danny Lobato, salutes the fallen comrades following his presentation during the ceremony.

Figure 3: Members of VFW Post 5231 stand at attention and salute as Taps are sounded.

Figure 4: Little"Wish" Moore (Grandson of Veteran, Noland and Auxiliary Member,Betty Alexander) holds his flag high as he joins others in honoring the memory of our fallen heroes.

We hope to be able to perform this ceremony with dignity, next year, at the site of our proposed, permanent Veteran's Memorial, just to the north of the section pictured here.
