VFW Post 5231
Mustered in January 23, 1946, Post 5231 has been actively serving Veterans and Community in the Four Corners Region. Mancos’ ”John Derrick Halls” Post 5231 boasts one of the oldest, continuously active members--Charlie Goff, aged 94. Charlie has rarely missed a meeting and has served as an officer several times over the past 60 years. He was Commander when the present Post home (which houses the VFW’s Mancos Opera House on Grand Avenue) was purchased in the 1950’s. Charlie has also served as an officer in District 12 for some forty years. Charlie, our only remaining Charter Member, encourages younger Veterans to join the ranks of the elite, so the tradition can continue.

Cedar Grove Veterans Memorial
A Veterans Memorial is under construction at Cedar Grove Cemetery. A project of VFW Post 5231 in Mancos, the Memorial was the inspiration of Veteran Jerry Mock. Its design features a 12’x20’ base with a curved wall and central engraved monolith to the north side of the monument.Within the wall are five sculptured panels representing the seals of the armed forces—Air Force, Marines, Army, Navy and Coast Guard. The curved design of the wall carries a two-fold symbolism, according to designer Jerry Mock.It represents an embrace of comfort to the families of those we honor, and the extended arms of the service men and women who offered their service and sacrifice to our grateful Nation. On the monolith are four bells, representing the four notes, which are played in the TAPS at memorial ceremonies. In the foreground is a podium for use in public ceremonies. Engraved granite markers are being offered for purchase by the public, to be installed as a memorial to individual veteran loved-ones. Purchase markers for $95 each. Application forms are available. Donations to the project are welcome.Contact any VFW Post 5231 or Auxiliary member for more information. See photos of construction progress in the photo display under the "newsletter tab" on this website.
